Circle Graphs

Post on May 31st, 2006 by chipsey-101

Today, in Math, we were working with circle graphs.

They aren’t hard at all…or at least, I don’t think they are. It’s hard to explain them, so I guess I’ll just give an example…

Pets Frequently bought by People

Cat - 23, dog - 32, fish - 40, hamster 20.

Now, you have to add up all the numbers. When they are all added up, you get 115. Now, divide the number of pets by 115.

Cat - 23 (23 ÷ 115 = .15)

Dog - 32 (32 ÷ 115 = .28)

Fish - 40 (40 ÷ 115 = .35)

Hamster - 20 (20 ÷ 115 = .17)

Now that you’re done that, you have to put the numbers into degrees. Since a circle has 360º, you multiply the decimal numbers by 360.

Cat - .15 x 360 = 8º

Dog - .28 x 360 = 101º

Fish - .35 x 360 = 126º

Hamster - .17 x 360 = 61º

Next, draw a circle (it works best if you have a compass.) Draw a line from the middle of the circle to the edge. It doesn’t matter where you draw the line. Get a protractor and put it on that line. The first animal is a cat; it has 8º. Draw 8º with your protractor. Do this with all of the pets. When you have all of the pieces filled in, label them. Remember when you divided the number of pets by 115, and the number came out as a decimal? Take that decimal and make it into a percentage. To do this, bring the decimal back 2 spaces to the right. Once you’ve done that, go to the circle graph and label all of the pieces with the name of the animal and the percentage. Colour the graph if you want, and now you’re done!

Easy :)
