Circle Graphs

Today, in Math, we were working with circle graphs.

They aren’t hard at all…or at least, I don’t think they are. It’s hard to explain them, so I guess I’ll just give an example…

Pets Frequently bought by People

Cat - 23, dog - 32, fish - 40, hamster 20.

Now, you have to add up all the numbers. When they are all added up, you get 115. Now, divide the number of pets by 115.

Cat - 23 (23 ÷ 115 = .15)

Dog - 32 (32 ÷ 115 = .28)

Fish - 40 (40 ÷ 115 = .35)

Hamster - 20 (20 ÷ 115 = .17)

Now that you’re done that, you have to put the numbers into degrees. Since a circle has 360º, you multiply the decimal numbers by 360.

Cat - .15 x 360 = 8º

Dog - .28 x 360 = 101º

Fish - .35 x 360 = 126º

Hamster - .17 x 360 = 61º

Next, draw a circle (it works best if you have a compass.) Draw a line from the middle of the circle to the edge. It doesn’t matter where you draw the line. Get a protractor and put it on that line. The first animal is a cat; it has 8º. Draw 8º with your protractor. Do this with all of the pets. When you have all of the pieces filled in, label them. Remember when you divided the number of pets by 115, and the number came out as a decimal? Take that decimal and make it into a percentage. To do this, bring the decimal back 2 spaces to the right. Once you’ve done that, go to the circle graph and label all of the pieces with the name of the animal and the percentage. Colour the graph if you want, and now you’re done!

Easy :)

Artistic Graphing

Today in Math, we did “artistic graphing.”

We were assigned pages in our math textbook, with examples of artistic graphs. Artistic graphs are just like bar graphs, but they are more interesting. For example, if your graph was about surf boards, instead of drawing bars you could draw surf boards. Anyhoo, the grade sevens did a graph about shoes. What most of us did was draw the graph on graph paper, then cut it out and glued it to white paper. The graphs were quite small, so we coloured in the rest of the space. I drew roads around mine, considering our graph was about shoes. They looked pretty good when they were done.

Plays in Social Studies

In social studies, we are making plays for different roles of people in Rome.

Some of the roles were a famous roman, or a roman woman. I can’t remember the other three right now. But we were assigned partners, and I’m with Nikita. We are doing a play about a roman woman that is always bossing a slave around, but in the end the slave doesn’t satisfy her, so she sells it to a slave market. We started a script and did some research. When it’s all done, I think our project will be really good.

I’ll update about this later on and how it went.

Posts of the Week!

Hey…

Here’s some interesting blog posts to check out!

Becky has written an interesting post about drinking and all of the concequences that you suffer from it. This post is good because it gives you something to think about and think twice before you go out and do something stupid…and who knows, you could save a life.

Ellyn wrote a good post about her Outsiders final project and how things are going with it. She talks about her plans, what her project is, and what it’s about.

Enjoy…

Graphing in Math

We started working with graphs in math lately.

It’s not hard, though, because in earlier grades, I did them a lot. I’m used to them by now. We got an assignment today, which was easy. The grade sevens did a lot with just analyzing graphs, and only had to draw a few. The grade eights drew a lot of graphs. I like analyzing graphs better because it’s easier, and it doesn’t take a lot of work :)

Playing Games in Social Studies

Today we played online games in social studies.

We played three different ones. My partner was Nikita, and we only played two of them. They were about Rome. They were pretty fun, although I didn’t understand one of them.

Outsiders Test

Today, we had an Outsiders test. It was a really awesome novel, and I really understood it, so I think I did good. Although the test was just a double-sided piece of paper, the questions were long and took a lot of thought.

We had to listen to a song, too called “The Girl Next Door” by Saving Jane. It has a lot to do with the novel.

“The Girl Next Door”

Small town homecoming queen
She’s the star in this scene
There’s no way to deny she’s lovely
Perfect skin, perfect hair
Perfumed hearts everywhere
Tell myself that inside she’s ugly
Maybe I’m just jealous
I can’t help but hate her
Secretly I wonder if my boyfriend wants to date her

She is the prom queen I’m in the marching band
She is a cheerleader I’m sitting in the stands
She gets the top bunk I’m sleeping on the floor
She’s Miss America and I’m just the girl next door

Senior class president
She must be heaven sent
She was never the last one standing
A backseat debutaunt
Everything that you want
Never to harsh or too demanding
Maybe I’ll admit it
I’m a little bitter
Everybody loves her but I just wanna hit her

She is the prom queen I’m in the marching band
She is a cheerleader I’m sitting in the stands
She gets the top bunk I’m sleeping on the floor
She’s Miss America and I’m just the girl next door
Oh and I’m just the girl next door

I don’t know why I’m feeling sorry for myself
I spend all my time wishing that I was someone else

She is the prom queen I’m in the marching band
She is a cheerleader I’m sitting in the stands
I get a little bit, she gets a little more
She’s Miss America and… she’s Miss America
I’m just the girl next door…

What does this song make you think of? How do you feel? If you have read “The Outsiders,” how does this song relate to the novel?

Blog Posts of the Week

Today we have to write a posts talking about blog posts that we thought were well written. We have to give links to them. We have to link to 2 different blog posts.

This is a link to Anna’s blog about her post on her bonfire night. I think it’s well written because it’s very descriptive and she made it sound fun. It also has proper grammar and paragraphs where they’re supposed to be.

This is a link to Tanner’s blog about the Artist in the School. He explains our play very well and what the plans are. He talks a lot about it, and how he thinks the little kids will get scared when they see the play. :)

Well…check out these awesome posts, and have a nice day! :D

Getting Some Comments!

I’ve been getting a lot of comments on my blog from people I don’t know. They’re really awesome!

Two of the people that I will mention are Isaac and Ysabel. They left really interesting comments. They are both on the post, “Trip with my buddies on May 19th & 20th!” Check them out, if you are interested. They are really good comments, ones to think about, and they have left links to their blogs on the comments. Go have a look at their blogs too.

Thanks, Isaac and Ysabel!!
