Cloning & Ethical Considerations

Post on April 11th, 2006 by chipsey-101

In school we were given topics in Science and we had to choose one and do an essay on it.

I chose to do cloning. Obviously, we had to research our topic before we did an essay on it. So I was researching my topic at Wikipedia, and I got a lot of info from there. Info that made me think again about whether cloning should be allowed.

Cloning is the process of creating an identical copy of an original. There are a lot of bad things about cloning and there are a lot of good things. Things that could change human society completely. Many religious groups think that cloning is wrong. It is believed that an embryo is a human life, therefore using embryos for experimenting with cloning is murder. Roman Catholicism believes the embryo has a soul and cloning would be contrary to God’s will. The United Church of Canada believes that cloning, if done ethically, can help treat diseases and improve public health. Many believe that cloning is attempting to play God.

There are a number of advantages to cloning. There are medical breakthroughs – we may be able to cure diseases relating to the cells, for example, cancer. Through cloning, scientists could identify defective genes that causes conditions such as down’s syndrome, leukemia, and cancer. There could be more organ transplants – therapeutic cloning is when new organs are created. Think of all the possibilities for those people who need transplants and sometimes have to wait years, or never, to receive an organ. Extinct and endangered species of animals could be saved through experimenting with cloning. Childless couples could possibly be able to have their child through cloning.

At first, I thought cloning was no big deal and it should be ethically right. But after researching further, I now beg to differ. I am against cloning because it is like playing God. Cloning is changing all of that around. Also, couples with no children could be able to have kids, but not through cloning. I think people should adopt homeless children rather than clone them. Think of all the starving orphans in the world who need a home because they are unable to have one. People should consider the implications for society before they go ahead and start cloning. There are a lot of good things about cloning, yet there are also some terrible things.

After reading this post, what do you think? Is cloning right? Do you agree or disagree? Why? Just leave a comment and give your opinion on cloning.

Don’t be afraid to speak your mind!!
